Day 21 - Liberal, KS - to Dodge City KS - 89 miles

Just the stats: 89 miles, 15.2 MPH average, mostly flat land now with rolling hills, cumulative 1,404 miles. No flats today, eight in total. Rainy, 65 to 70 degrees.

I should have known something was up. Dorothy's house (from the Wizard of Oz) was 2 doors down from our hotel last night. Also, we met two storm chasers checking into our hotel! Hmmmmm.

Our day really started last night when we experienced thunderstorms, and the news broadcast severe weather and tornado warnings for our area. Tornado's had been sighted just 40 miles away, One of our riders - Peg checked with the front desk on emergency procedures. Hoping that we would be directed to a very deep and heavily fortified tornado shelter, she was somewhat dismayed to learn that, in the event of an alarm, we were to take our blankets into the hallway, close the door to our room, lie down, and cover ourselves with the blankets. RIGHT! Fortunately there were no sirens during the night.

As we left our hotel in Liberal, KS this morning, we were confronted with moderate crosswinds which stayed with us all day except for the times that they became headwinds. There were very dark and ominous clouds covering the morning sky.

The first 40 miles were dry but you could tell storms were coming. These two photos were taken at the Dalton Gang Hideout, our SAG stop (where we get water and food).

As our ride progressed so did the rain clouds. At about mile 45-BOOM - rain and then heavy rain this turned into a downpour with pea-sized hail.

So, after about an hour the rain let up. I was freezing but warmed up as I dried out. By the time I hit Dodge City I was warm and dry.

Two riders dropped out today.
