Day 22 - Dodge City KS to Great Bend, KS - 89 miles

Just the stats: 89 miles, 16 MPH average, mostly flat land now with rolling hills, cumulative 1,490 miles. No flats today, eight in total. Sunshine, 65 to 80 degrees.

Today's weather was completely different from yesterday. We had a beautiful day!! Bright blue sky, no rain and calmer winds. What a huge difference.

I rode in a pace line with about eight other riders for the first thirty miles, so that made the time go by very fast. The terrain is, of course, very flat, and we're definitely in the land of "amber waves of grain". The road is generally straight, and the only clue of an upcoming town is a grain elevator on the horizon. So how far can you actually see in Kansas? During the morning, I spotted the silhouette of a grain elevator in the distance and clocked the mileage to it...7.1 miles!!

We had a couple of places of interest along the way. The first one is the midway point between New York and San Francisco. We will cross our actual midway point in a few days.

I also stopped at Pawnee Rock, a point that is about fifty feet higher than the surrounding country, and is along the Santa Fe Trail. I was alone at the time so the stop was very quiet except the sound of birds chirping and a light breeze through the tall grass.

So, good ride today. I am riding faster and longer now. I guess I am getting used to this and getting stronger - like Rocky! (That was my unofficial theme song during my training period at home.)

Tom:

The brothers at Dunkin Donuts are praying for you (Mark, Dewey, David, David, Rob, and Don). God bless you and may he keep you safe and strong.

I rode a couple hours this weekend in 90+ heat. Mountain biking has been fantastic. Ride on my brother, ride on. I am jealous.

Tom,

I'm praying for your quick recovery. Yvonne said you landed on your head, so buy a new helet and throw the old one away.

God bless,
Will

Tom,

Glad to hear you are only going to be sore. I'm sure it may be a little more then that but hopefully after a couple of days you will have worked the pain out biking and enjoying the country. May God continue to watch over you. A course this means He has more for you to do. So ride on Bro.

My friend, my friend - I just got Yvonne's email - and you'll stay front and center in my prayers, now especially for your recovery and continued strength. You are indeed covered with love and support from all of us at home. I'm so thankful you aren't hurt worse than you are, and I know that by the continued grace of God, you will be able to pedal, pedal, pedal!!! Today was Richard's last day - and the sendoff at 11:00 was overwhelming - many tears were flowing. More about that if you want to hear it. It was really wonderful. Tom, hang in there and enjoy the blessings of today AND tomorrow. And follow Will's advice - I trust you'll be showing off your new helmet with the next set of pictures... We love you!!

Thankfully, you are okay! I'm going to ask Kevin to send you a light bar from one of their cruisers so others will see you coming. Hang tough. Psalm 55:22

Love,

Rita

It sounds like the story about your recovery after something that broke your helmet might be interesting. It sounds like your ok. I sure hope so. KANSAS!
