Day 6 - Suffern, NY to Somerset, NJ 74 miles

Just the stats: 74 miles, 15.4 MPH average. Started riding at 7:40 am, finished at 1:00 pm - 4 hours 53 minutes riding time. Sunny, cool with sunny blue skies, 53 to 72 degrees. Calories burned on the ride - 4,481.

We have ridden 455 miles in the last six days.

This is one of my favorite signs.

Today was a good riding day. The huge climbs (I hope) are gone. We had some long hills early in the day but it transitioned to rolling terrain with reasonable uphills. We did have a short 0.4 very steep hill that was at its steepest a 19% grade - that is steep. I was in my lowest gear standing on my pedals. Here is another tidbit - I don't walk up hills - never. No rider on this trip would be caught dead walking their bike up a hill.

Gordon and I have been riding together for the past few days. After a while we usually find a rider or two who ride at our same pace.

When I trained, I learned not to eat three hours before a ride, so most days I don't eat breakfast. I do use plenty of supplements. I think they help. The Endurolytes are for electrolyte replenishment and help me for sure to avoid cramping. The other stuff probably doesn't hurt and at least gives me expensive urine.

We have really been blessed with good weather, it is supposed to be good again tomorrow as we ride 80 miles to Hammonton, NJ.
.
Terry - the bag lady is getting ready to strike again. The scales were out and there was talk about being "fair to the other riders". I didn't hear anyone complaining except the boss. Too bad she chooses to get negative.
.
Rachel, Jen Alan and Yvonne are meeting me in Rehoboth on Friday. I'm looking forward to meeting up with Larry O'Neal in NC and Dan Knapp in SC.

Thanks for following along. I'll try to get better pictures. - Tom

Tom;

I just got back from Philadelphia where I ran the half marathon. I got a good time of 2:09 which pleased me. So I am just getting caught up on your blog. The ride pictures look really great. I can totally sympathize with you on this bag thing. It is totally stupid. It is fussing over something which has no meaning and is only an pain in the butt for the riders. For the cost of tour you would think you could bring a decient amount of luggage.
Sounds like you are making grat mileage though I was impressed with the 455 miles in 6 day number. Wish I was there.
I bought a new Giant CR1 Formula one bike. All carbon frame great bike.

Terry -- You just keep getting better and better as you get older, opposite of most people. I bet you never would have believed who you are today ten years ago. Good run! I'm proud of you.
I hope Surley isn't insulted with your new bike. I would love to ride with you again, seeing you let loose on a light bike made for speed, not comfort like Surley.
The luggage thing is a real distressing situation, it's sad because it dosn't have to be that way. - Tom

I hope Hammer is a sponsor of yours, after the PR you're giving them with that photo!

Petey Pop,
Can't wait to see you ride into Rehoboth Beach tomorrow and also spend Friday with you! My mom is busy packing my bag. Don't ride too fast down those hills, you'll have to teach me how to ride a bike one day soon!
Love,
Rachel

Good Wednesday afternoon! It's a lovely day here, and I hope it's the same for you. Especially since you're done for the day... What's the deal with luggage? Who cares what the luggage weighs? Who do they think they are...American Airlines??? lol lol lol

I'm looking forward to having Roxie. Maui went home last night, so Amy's been resting up all day for her next big play date. Bob said last night - devil dog? We're getting devil dog too? I asked him if he'd ever met Roxie, and all he said was, no, but I've heard all about her - and her reputation scares me! Grin - it'll be fun and I know she'll be fine. He'll love her as much as all the others by the time she has to go home... Tell Jen she might expect to sleep with them when they get home, if she doesn't already. Have a great time with all the family!
