Day 8 - Somerset, NJ to Hammonton, NJ - 80 miles

Remember - you can click on the picture to enlarge it if you want.

Just the stats: 80 miles, 16.8 MPH average. Started riding at 7:40 am, finished at 12:58 pm - 4 hours 43 minutes riding time. Sunny, cool with sunny blue skies, 51 to 72 degrees. Calories burned on the ride - 5,016

We have ridden 535 miles in the last seven days.

This was another good day. Rolling, gentle terrain and nice weather. I took off with the lead riders today. The first SAG or rest stop was at 35.4 miles, we got there around 9:30 am. Our average speed at that point was 17.4 mph.

The guy on the left is Jeff Bott - he is our bike mechanic, next is Jim Olsson, me and then Jim Hall. When we rode across the US in 2007, these guys (not me) were called the "big dogs". I stuck with them until about mile 42 and then dropped off. They got in to the hotel at 12:35 pm, I was next at 1 pm.

I may not be able to run with the big dogs yet, but I ask you, who has the better legs? They're all dressed like it's cold out. Actually, I'm working so hard just to keep up, I'm overheating while these guys are just cruising along at a good but comfortable pace.
When we ride in a pace line, each rider takes a turn leading for a mile or two. It was hard leading at 18 to 21 mph but I had to do it if I wanted to earn my place.
We headed east and south today, getting closer to the coast. Our hotel is about 20 to 25 miles west of Atlantic City, NJ.

NEWS FLASH: I JUST GOT BACK FROM OUR "ROUTE RAP" --- WE ARE NOT RIDING TOMORROW. Severe weather and heavy winds have caused the Cape May - Lewes Ferry to cancel sailing for tomorrow. Tracy has rented three vans and we are all riding in vehicles to Rehobeth Beach, Del. So, we have two rest days in a row! That's fine with me.

Saturday we ride 66 miles along the coast, through Ocean City onto Pocomoke City, MD. If the weather is good, we will be rested up and will fly down the coast on this short riding day. Should be fun. Stay tuned.

Tomorrow Yvonne, Jen, Rachel and Alan are meeting me in Rehobeth Beach. I can't wait to show off my family and especially my six month old granddaughter.

Tomorrow I eat a big breakfast for a change. Have a great weekend, I'm not sure if I will post again before Saturday evening. Tom

Tom - happy to hear that you are hanging in there with the big dogs. Unlike Lance, I haven't gotten back on the bike since my cancer went into remission - a couple of short test rides but nothing serious. Your trip has me thinking about a long ride again. Take care and my prayers are with you. Ed Pauksta
